From 8 to 11 June 1951 apDroxtmately 8,000 troops moved, to Nanning from the Chienhsien (108-20, 21-56) (ate) -11siaotunp (,J4 ,). -Shangesu (108-03, 22-11) area where they were engaged in the suppression of guerrillas in the Shihwan tashan (108- , 22- ) and around. Lingshan (j k ,1j) and, Tungehun Ninety percent of the troops were natives of tionari, Shansi and Ropeh. 2. On 4 June the Ewangei Military District Command. (BiTDC) ordered the requisi- tioning of about 180 boats and 20 trucks in the Tungehiang area, Nanning.2 3. Readquartera of the 44 Array was in Canton. The 124 and 137 Divisions of the 44 Army3 were centered in Nuichou and Tungkuan respectively. The 124 Division was near Chengk9ai (14 1* ); its well-equipped, seasoned troops were natives of southeast China. There were 7,000 men of the 124 Division deployed. in the Ruichou Naifeng.Lufeng area. The 137 Division, under MAO Chih.te (} }. was comparatively inferior; over half of the men were former Nationalist troops, mostly natives of Shansi, Nopeh and. !onan. They were mainly armed with Japanese, American and 7.9 mm rifles. 4. Four thousand men of the 132 Division, 18 Arrrq,5 were assigned along the Canton-Kowloon railroad. Three regiments, totaling 6,000, of.the Tang chiang P'ilitary Administrative Branch Command. (etc) and 3,000 local militia- men were stationed in the Tungkuan (113-46, 23-02) -Polo (1114.17, 23-09) area. 5. Total troops in the East River area were estimated to be 20,000. 25X1A 1-Comment. The Ewangsi ;'ilit.ary District Command announced the killing of 34,000 guerrillas anrl the capturing of 31,000 rifles in f'ay. The figure is exaggerated, but it is true that the guerrillas in the Shihwantashan area suffered considerable losses. 2. 25X1A 1111111119? Possibly to transport troops from Nanning to Ywangtung.
