In May 1952 students of Lingnan University in Canton could secure permits to travel to Hong Kong from a police sub-station near the eampue of the univer- sity.l The university acted as a guarantor. The permit showed the date of departure and return and a -police chop of approval, and had attached to it a photograph of the person to whom it was issued. It was easier for college students to obtain permits for travel to. Hong Kong than for any other class cif 'persons .2 2. En route to Hong Kong by train, passengers got off the train at Shench'uan (114-08, 22-32), where Cantonese soldiers inspected their travel permits. The first inspection of the travel permits at Shench'uan was made carefully, primarily to check the resemblance of the photographs on the permits with the holders of the permits, and a few questions were asked.
