A number of optical specialists from the Carl Zeiss Plant at Jena'have been
employed during the past six years at the Progress Works, an optical developmental
factory in the vicinity of Leningrad, USSR. Those Zeiss specialists who have
returned to Jena from the Leningrad plant during 1952 include the following:
Professor Hauser (fnu), Dr. Falta (fnu), Graduate Engineer Reindl (fnu), and Dipl.
Optiker Mehlis (fnu). Professor Hauser., a microscope specialist, is now too old
and sickly to be active in his profession. Mehlis was the scientific head of the
micro-laboratory in the Leningrad plant. Dr. Falta was formerly one of Zeiss,,
.Jena's leading specialists in the field of infrared spectographyq Reindl is now
employed in the central testing section of the Jena plant. The most important
A11--items of optical equipment developed at the Progress Works are sent. to COT
4tl tie `:.: ,Optical Institute)in Moscow for final testing and evaluation.
Two fields being particularly emphasised in the development murk of the Leningrad
plant are those of mirror microscopic lenses'and microscopic equipment for
testing the hardness of metals. Fluorspar and quartz lenses are being combined
with mirror lenses in the microscope developmental work.
One of the top Soviet officials now at the Leningrad plant is Svortzov'.(fnu),
who played a leading role in the dismantling of the Zeiss plant in 1946. Svortzov
is 40 to 45 years old, short and slim, with. dark hair. In 1946 Svortzov was
wearing the uniform of a Soviet Army captain.
