(atg) International: Time To Diagnose Bird Flu May Hamper Future Pandemic Control
The more than two weeks It took to diagnose recent human cases of suspected H5N1 avian flu in
Turkey demonstrates the weakness of containment strategies for avian flu, even in nations with
strong public health systems. Several members of a Turkish farm family were sick for more than a week
before they were hospitalized, and laboratory confirmation of an H5 infection took four additional days,
ItIVHO tests confirmed the infections were H5N1 on 7 January.

Press reports say the Turkish patients had close contact with or ate diseased birds on their family farm.
Doctors found no evidence of human-to-human transmission.
If the virus becomes transmissible among people, those infected could spread the disease for
one to two days before they show symptoms. IC-1,9r) (b)(3)
