Dear Coordinator:
Under the Freedom of Infonnation Act, 5 U.S.C. subsection 552,1 am requesting
information or records on Jozef (Josef) SWIATLO, lieutenant colonel of the Polish
security service, who defected to the United States in December 1953. Swiatlo was a
deputy director of the infamous 10th Department of the Ministry of Public Security.
Specifically, I am looking for information about Swiatlo's contacts with the US
intelligence/counterintelligence services prior to his defection; circumstances of his
defection; his daily and professional life after defection; information he provided to the
US; assessment of information he provided; his analyses of situation in Poland and Soviet
Union; family life after defection; hobbies and interests; arrangements for his safety
(aliases; protection); contacts with family he left in Poland; his new family; work for th4-1
U.S. government; his psychological profile; remuneration for his service and
employment; employment information; assistance in conducting intelligence and counteiti
intelligence training and operations; date and circumstances of his death; publications; c)
honors and awards.
I request the above information for the purpose of publishing an article/book about Jozefi
Swiatlo. I am working on it with Polish historians as the Polish authorities released all og:
his files in 2003.
