FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST
WILLIAM STEPHENSON (23 January 1897 31 January 1989)
Information and Privacy Coordinator
Central Intelligence Agency
Washington, D.C. 20505
Tuesday, January 02, 2018
Dear FOIA/MDR officer:
In my capacity as an investigative journalist I am writing your office to request all
records, irrespective of media, regarding the Canadian national William Stephenson (23
January 1897 31 January 1989), who spent much of VVWII in New York City and was a
colleague of J. Edgar Hoover as well as leading OSS and other U.S. intelligence officers.
From the Wikipedia biography of Stephenson:
Sir William Samuel Stephenson, CC MC DFC (23 January 1897 31 January
1989) was a Canadian soldier, airman businessman, inventor sovmaster and the
senior representative of British Security Coordination (BSC) for the entire western
hemisphere during World War II. He is best known by his wartime intelligence
codename Intrepid. Many people consider him to be one of the real-life inspirations
for James Bond. Ian Fleming himself once wrote, "James Bond is a highly
romanticized version of a true spy. The real thing is ... William Stephenson."
As head of the British Security Coordination, Stephenson handed over British
scientific secrets to Franklin D. Roosevelt and relayed American secrets to Winston
Churchill.Il In addition, Stephenson has been credited with changing American public
opinion from an isolationist stance to a supportive tendency regarding America's
entry into World War II.
The Agency's FOIA Library Reading Room sites offers over sixty records responding to a
"William Stephenson" query.
https://www.cia.ciovilibrarvireadingroom/search/site/%22VVilliam/020Stephenson%22 There
is no need to send me copies of these records.
According to Agency FOIA logs, there has already been at least one request for the same
subject (F-2000-00010). Please release any information that has already been released to
other requesters first other than on the FOlA Library website - and then review and release
previously-unreleased records as soon as they are processed.
Apart from your normal search, please also query the Agency's National Clandestine
