WEST GERMAN AIDE ARRESTED
SUBJECT:
REF
The Security Group of the German Federal Proaecutor'a Office
arrested five people on April 24 for espionage on behalf of East
Germany. Most prominent of the group is Gunter Karl Heinz Guillaume,
who was employed as an aide in the office of Chancellor Brandt.
Guillaume was born on February 1, 1927 in Berlin and came to the
FRG, with his wife, as a refugee in 1956. He worked in the Social
Democratic Party (SPD) regional offices in Frankfurt/Main until
moving to Bonn and the Chancellery in 1970 or 1971. His duties in
the Chancellery are described as liaison with SPD parliamentary
leaders. Guillaume was not a high ranking functionary, but his
position gave him access to considerable information of interest
to the East Germans.
