1. (Internal Use Only - GLC) Fran Hewitt, on the staff of
the Senate Appropriations Committee, called to say that he had a
considerable amount of classified material to be destroyed and asked
if we would assist (as we have in the past) by making our incinerator

to cooperate with him and would make arrangements with him for this
to be done next week.
2. (Confidential - GLC) Jay Sourwine, on the staff of the
Senate Special Subcommittee on Internal Security, called to say he
wanted to be quite clear regarding our position on the case.
He said he plans to talk to Chairman Eastland about this in the next
few days and wanted to be sure he fully understood our position.
committee decides to pursue this course, he wants to be certain
that the Agency will not take a position which would thwart this
approach. I told Sourwine I would discuss this with Mr. Maury on
his return and we would be in touch with him early next week.
Sourwine said he was not trying to pressure us in any way but wanted
to be absolutely certain about this before talking with Senator Eastland.
3. (Unclassified - LLM) Attempted to see Mr. M. Albert
Figinski, Chief Counsel, Senate Improvements in Judicial Machinery
Subcommittee, in connection with Senator Tydings' letter to the

4. (Confidential - LLM) In connection with Senator Ernest F.
Hollings' (D., S.C.) earlier call to OLC, for information on
the World Anti-Communist League, accompanied the (b)(3)
Taiwan analyst of OCI, to a meeting with Senator Hollings and Michael (b)(6)
Joy, his Legislative Assistant. Senator Hollings' interest stems from an
invitation to attend a conference in Taiwan on 23 January in which the
League is involved.
he briefing went well, with Senator Hollings complementing
on his detailed knowledge of the subject. I stressed that the
Government's position with respect to the World Anti-Communist League
was not within the Agency's province. Mr. Joy had contacted Mr. Hart,
of State Department, whose information and evaluation was similar to
that given by Senator Hollings was grateful for our help and
determined it to be in his best interest to decline the invitation.
5. (Confidential - CE.A) At the request of Garner J. Cline,
Staff Director, Subcommittee on Immigration and Naturalization,

Liberty to whom he could write a "thank you" letter.
6. (Confidential - CEA) Talked to Frank McNamara, House
Committee on Un-American Activities, concerning the Committee's
request for to appear before the Committee. I noted
that Chester Smith, General Counsel of the Committee had made the
original request. McNamara was unaware that the request had been
made and expressed some doubt that could provide information
of value to the Committee. He also stated that because of the lack of
apppriations and a Committee agenda that he thought it unlikely that
could appear before the Committee prior to February. McNamara
check with Smith on this.
7. (Confidential - JGO) Met with Mr. Robert Michaels, House

covered would not directly involve the Agency and that the presence of the
DCI would not be required, but that it would be appreciated if an Agency
briefer could be available on standby for a world situation roundup, if
time is available. The DCI, DD/I and Office of Security were advised.
