Below is quoted an excerpt from a dispatch of 13 June
from the Chief of Station, Karlsruhe:
"The most remarkable case of self-improvement
by study and self-discipline I have witnessed in
this organization. Starting with a spotty reputation
and a very spotty background, Conein has seriously
applied himself to self-education, both by outside
study and by a conscientious and level-headed ap-
proach to the job given him. Has succeeded in coming
a long way and will go a lot further. This, combined
with his personal courage, activist tendencies,
strong personality and devotion to the job, make him
one of the good bets for the future. ,Training people
� should be carefully briefed concerning his background
and his desire for improvement and should be encouraged
to help him in every way to make the best out of his
Washington experience."
