1. (S) Recent International Criminal Tribunal for the
former Yugoslavia (ICTY) indictments of senior Croatian Army (HV)
officers for crimes committed during the 1995 "Operation Storm"
in the disputed Krajina region, have resulted in several Croatian
press articles alleging US Government complicity in these
operations. Consequently, a Newsweek journalist investigating
these claims has requested comments from the US State Department
and Intelligence Community. Defense counsel for at least one of
these suspects will probably attempt to claim that the US
Government supported the planning and/or execution of this
controversial military campaign. '
