SUPPLEMENT TO
1. In early August 1951 the naval personnel training center of the Pearl
River Naval Command Headquarters was established in Tungkuan (113-146, 23-
02). Trainees are all graduates of Junior middle school and are good
swimmers. The training period is 100 days. Soviet instructors are
attached to the center. Upon graduation, the trainees are sent to serve
in the Chinese Communist Navy in the Pearl River area. Since its insti-
tution, the center has graduated 80 trainees who are now sailing on
various gunboats in the Pearl River area. On 1 October 1951 the training
center was ordered to expand.
2. In late September the following vessels of various types were observed off
the Fuld.en coasts
a. Hsinghua Bay (119-48, 25.220: 15 motor vessels, 190 wooden boats,
and 5 motor boats.
b. P'inghai Bay (119-12, 25-10): 30 motor vessels and 30 wooden boats.
c. Meichou Bay (119-04, 25-02): 5 motor vessels and 70 wooden boats.
d. Hsiaoch'i (?J 't ) Harbor: 10 wooden boats.
e. Ch'uanchou (118.18, 24-5o) Harbo#,R 1 steamship, 20 motor vessels,
240 wooden boats, and 3 motor bostp.
f. Shenhu (118-140, 224-40) Bay: 150 wooden ts.
g. Huit' ou (1? ) to Aot' ou (118-11e, x-33):. 2 motor vessels,

1. Comment. The difference between "motor vessel" and "motor boat"
is not given but it is ap,)arently a matter of size.
Comment. The "motor vessels" in paragraph 2 are probably
the same as'the "motor junks" in paragraph 3. Also, the "wooden boats"
in paragraph 2 are probably the seine as the "junk0in paragraph 3.
