Iraq: The revolutionary regime controls Iraq
and is moving rapidly to normalize the situation.
Little doubt remains that Qasim is dead. US
officials in Baghdad are convinced that pictures of
his body on Baghdad TV are authentic.
Messages of support are pouring into Baghdad
from inside and outside the country. Kurdish rebel
leader Mulla Mustafa Al-Barzani has sent his ap-
proval.
The Arab countries have raced to recognize the
revolutionary government. So far the UAR, Yemen,
Jordan, Syria, Algeria, Morocco, Kuwait, and Saudi
Arabia have extended recognition. Yugoslavia has
also recognized the regime.
Moscow and Peiping have continued publicly to
restrict themselves to factual reporting of Iraqi de-
velopments.

The new cabinet is dominated by the socialist
Baath Party, as is the Revolutionary Council. Five
cabinet members were educated in American univer-
sities. One has a degree from the University of
London. The defense minister was military attache
in Washington during 1957-58. It appears that, de-
spite its birth in a military coup, the regime will
be dominated by the civilian leadership. Emphasis
is already being placed on the return to civilian
government soon.
