Approved for Release: 2019/10/01 C06380032 From: Sent: To: Cc: Subject: Wednesday, December 10, 2014 8:38 PM 'Mark Mazzetti'; [AIN] RE: RE: Fwd: CLASSIFICATION: UNCLASSIFIED Mark - We only got clearance for the 3 wire services. We were told that is the standard practice for pool reporting. It is too late to get Security concurrence to add another (and even then it would be unlikely). Sorry. But good to hear from you!!! You guys have been writing up a storm about CIA without bothering to contact us. Which wouldn't be bad if you hadn't fundamentally misunderstood our position by misreading our statements. This paragraph was particularly dumb: "The contrary pressures on the agency were evident in two news releases its public affairs office issued on Tuesday. The first struck a cautious tone, acknowledging "serious mistakes" by the agency while saying the Senate report's findings went too far. The second was more forthright, declaring bluntly: "Was the detention program effective? Yes." We told you and every other reporter that would listen that CIA's position would be: 1) They are not coming back 2) We acknowledge many wrongs (b)(3) (b)(3) (b)(3) (b)(3) 1 Approved for Release: 2019/10/01 C06380032 Approved for Release: 2019/10/01 C06380032 3) The program produced valuable intelligence that was the bedrock of our understanding of AQ, but we will not say EITs were the reason because that is unknowable 4) We were accurate in the vast majority of cases cited by SSCI in representing the value of that intelligence Those are not contradictory. Those are the facts. When you guys are ready to actually understand the 20 case studies and what SSCI got wrong let us know. I'm not sure what the single minor mistake they had to correct after June 2013, but there are in fact many more than that and we'd be happy to walk you through them. See you tomorrow!
