USSR: A recent statement by Soviet cosmonaut
Yuri Gagarin suggests that the USSR expects a major
standdown in manned space flights following the crash
of Soyuz 1 on 23 April.
Gagarin told a Soviet newspaper on 17 May that it
would take time to discover and correct the causes of
the accident and to conduct further tests. His is the
first tacit Soviet admission that
the investigation by the special commission set up after
the ill-fated flight may be long and complex.
The Soviets have evidently decided to
admit publicly only to a parachute malfunction, the
direct cause of the crash. Gagarin claimed that there
were no malfunctions in the spacecraft's life support
systems, that radio communications were excellent,
and that deorbit was normal.
Gagarin may have been hinting at
other problemswhich may prove more difficult to
correct than the parachute malfunction--when he con-
cluded that the Soviets would now have to pay greater
attention to engineering and to check-outs and testing
before attempting another Soyuz flight.
