(11//AWO)CIA Declassification Center
(U//A-Hi0) From the Archives: Hollywood Star Reminisces about WWII Cover and Deception
(U//A1U0) A 1972 document from the Hoover Institute/Casey Collection that was recently reviewed at the CIA
Declassification Center is a transcript of a talk by Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. at a Strategic Planning Seminar. Fairbanks
starred in a number of Hollywood movies through the 1920s and 1930s, but as a commissioned US Navy Reserve
officer, he became involved early in WWII with cover and deception applications. His talk provided insights from
his experiences in the Mediterranean, discussing the use of "every kind of musical, electronic, and sonic device, and
every kind of boat for real and fake raids, smoke and other funny business" to keep German units in Naples in place
and preventing them from counterattacking the Allied beachhead at Salerno, Italy. Fairbanks went on to describe
operations in support of Allied landings in Southern France, working with the Navy's Special Operations Group,
OSS, and the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). He notes that Berlin Radio announced that thousands of
allied paratroopers had been dropped in southern France, but several hours later corrected itself by stating that
"these were booby-trapped dummy paratroopers," and added that "this deception could only have been conceived by
the sinister Anglo-Saxon mind."
(UHA11113) From the Archives: CIA Documents Found in 1965 When Furniture Moved in White House
(UNA-1440) A White House situation room log dated 1965 from the Johnson Library files that was recently
reviewed at the CIA Declassification Center noted that several CIA documents had been discovered on the floor of a
White House office during an exchange of furniture. The "documents [were-I found among envelopes to be
discarded. White House police are typing up a report."
This is a record.
