Hungary Celebrates the Fiftieth Anniversary of Bela.Kun's
Soviet Republic
Party delegations from all of the Warsaw Pact countries
and a government delegation from Yugoslavia were in Budapest
last week for the'anniversary of the 1919 Hungarian Republic.
At a 20 March meeting in Parliament, speaker Gyula Kallai delivered
a memorial address lauding the party's past and its ties to the
Soviet Union. He also attacked the Maoist leadership in China.
The speeches of the foreign delegations reflected more pre-
occupation with national concerns than commentary on the anniver-
sary itself. The:Poles and East Germans condemned West German
imperialism, the Czechoslovaks and Rumanians dwelled at length
on the fascist intervention which expelled Bela Kun and _even
the Soviets managed a:statement on the inviolability of their
borders.
An interesting sidelight to the celebrations was the
announcement that Gyorgy Lukacs, who served as Bela Kun's
commissar of education in 1919 and as Imre Nagy's minister
of culture in 1956, was awarded the Order of Merit. The award
is a further step in Lukacs's rehabilitation but the party was
cautious in emphasizing that it officially recognized only
Lukac's contributions in 1919, and not his semi-heretical
Marxist theories on de-Stalinization. (b)(3)
