I (U/44,1440) Publications Review Board (tyntron) CIA Declassification Center (U/LULQ) Declassification Center Reviews Last Cable from PBSUCCESS (U//A1-1103 The DO team at the CIA Declassification Center recently reviewed for declassification the final cable from the field, dated 13 July 1954, involving CIA's PBSUCCESS covert action in Guatemala. The cable, which was redacted in part stated, "hope you enjoyed association as much as [this station has]. The book is now closed but the story was a good one." PBSUCCESS was a CIA covert action authorized by President Eisenhower that called for psychological, economic, diplomatic, and paramilitary action against the Guatemalan government. The CIA Declassification Center in conjunction with the Special Collections Division will be releasing an additional 100,000+ pages of records concerned with PBSUCCESS over the next several months. (UPATe1.) From the Archives: In 1969, Nixon Attends DDCI's Swearing-In Ceremony (U///rItIln) President Nixon attended the swearing-in ceremony of CIA Deputy Director General Robert E. Cushman on 7 May 1969 at the White House rose garden. Nixon stated, according to documents recently reviewed at the CIA Declassification Center, "Usually, as you know, I am not present except for the swearing-in of the Chairman or the top Directors of the agencies, but this is an exceptional case for reasons that all of you will understand." The President pointed out that Cushman had been his Assistant for National Security Affairs when he was Vice President. President Nixon went on to cite one instance when he gave General Cushman a particularly difficult task-- to move half of Nixon's staff from the Senate Office Building over to the Capitol. General Cushman accomplished the task but observed that "it was more difficult to move secretaries from the Senate Office building to the Capitol than it was to move a whole division of Marines across the Pacific." f.
