1. At low or neap tides it is possible to walk between Sonjae-do (126-30,
37-14) and Taebu-do (126-36, 37-14), and between Taebu-do and the
mainland. One such tide occurred on 2 September.
2. North Korean troops on Taebu-do consist of one company with a possible
strength of 180 men. At night members of this company, often as many
as 100, move to Sonjae-do where there are prepared positions on high
ground. On the nights of 28-31 August there were attempts made to
land small parties of troops on Yonghung-do (126-28� 37-16), but these
failed because of weather, the presence of patrol craft, or other
reasons. Attempts were also made to send intelligence agents to
Yonghung-do to determine the strength of ROK troops, On Taebu-do
1,000 young men were collected as security patrols. Seven men on
Taebu-do volunteered for the North lorean army, bringing their own
rifles. The troops were armed with 1t-1 rifles.
