This is the entry level Open Source Officer (OSO) position in the Open Source Center.
The Level I OSO builds media expertise in a particular region or topic. With guidance, the OSO officer plans and
executes basic foreign media collection and attends open source analytic courses. With guidance, this officer

identifies and summarizes key points in longer vernacular items. At this level, the level I OSO officer also begins
to synthesize the key points of multiple items into a cohesive informational product. Working closely with more
experienced officers, the Level I OSO is a member of a virtual, international team of foreign national staff,
contract translators and US staff.
With guidance, the Level I OSO officer becomes familiar with the media environment and socio-economic
context in which the media operate for a particular country or region by reading media characterizations, media
guides, web reference reports, source descriptors, commentator profiles, and other media analysis products.
With guidance, the Level I OSO conducts basic Internet searches and exploits foreign media databases. The
Level I OSO may assign, monitor and/or evaluate foreign national employees or contractors.
BA or MA in a relevant language,or area studies, International Relations, History, Political Science, Economics,
Journalism, Information Technology, Law or Security Studies.
