I have your letter, and it Is with deep appreciation
for your contributions to this Administration and to
our Nation that I accept your resignation as Director
of Central Intelligence, effective January 20, 1977.
Lharing the past year, you have successfully faced
enormous challenges. Under your dedicated leader-
ship and direction, the Agency has regained its balance.
I am confident that it is now better prepared than ever
before to fulfill its vital role. The progress that has
been made is an impressive tribute to your energy,
Integrity, and outstanding abilities.
/ am happy to have this opportunity to express my
personal gratitude and that of all Americans for the
fine job you have done. In the years ahead, I look
forward to contineing our friendships You have my
