Indonesia: Demands to bring President Sukarno
to trial have increased.
Yesterday General Nasution, head of the Indo-
nesian Congress, told a student delegation that its
demand for Congress to remove Sukarno from office
and bring him to trial would be implemented. Some
members of Parliament are also calling for his trial.
The government nevertheless apparently still hopes
to persuade the President to resign voluntarily and
leave the country.
Results of an official investigation into Sukarno's
involvement in the abortive coup plot of October 1965
have been forwarded to General Suharto. This and
other evidence being collected could be used against
him should he refuse to resign.
A further sign of growing pressures on Sukarno
is a report that leaders of his National Party have
joined the attempt to persuade him to step down.
