Battle was born 011 25 October 1927 in
Montevideo. He comes from a family of
presidents that includes most recently his late
father, former President (1947-51) Luis Battle
Berres, Battle holds a law degree .from the
University of the Republic. He began his political
career in 1945 when he,foined List 15�a
minority faction of the PC, During 1958-67 he
was a deputy in the national chamber of
Deputies. He ran LITISuccessadty for president in
1966, 1971, 19819, and 1994 During Uruguay's
military dictatorship (197344). Battle went
underground as a representative of the PC in the
Triumvirate, a clandestine party authority. With
the restoration of civilian rule in 1984� Battle
