MEMORANDUM FOR: DC/SMS/DDS&T
SUBJECT : POWERS, Gary Francis
REFERENCE : Your Memo, DD/S&T #3066/72, dated 27 October 1972
I read your memorandum with interest regarding Gary Powers'
comment or inference that CIA had pressured Lockheed to fire him.
For your information this is a lot of bologna. The record is
replete with Agency help proffered Powers and Lockheed's desire to
help him. In fact, after Lockheed felt it could no longer support
Powers, the Agency funded an extension to enable Powers to
alleviate his own situation. There are other things that can be
said regarding the Government bending over backward to support
Powers but there is no need to treat it in this paper since it is
in the records. It's too bad a guy like Gary takes the tack that
he does in the face of an awful lot of help rendered by Uncle Sam.

MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, Special Projects Staff
SUBJECT : POWERS, Gary Francis
1. During the week 15-21 October Mr. Powers made an
appearance at the 'Open Forum" on the campus at Californitl
State University, Northridge. Various persons of natioral
interest for political or other reasons are invited to
speak and be questioned by students on a relatively inforcai
basis at the "Open Forum." Mr. Powers talked about his
experiences and said in the course of his talk that in 1f170.
two weeks after having submitted his book to CIA for review
before publishing, he was laid off at Lockheed. He was
asked if he meant that CIA had pressured Lockheed to firs
him; his answer was something like "Yes, I do, but you cr
draw your own conclusions from those facts."
2. The above information WAS reroivpd frnm
thought that if Power's statement or inference were
true, then CIA had treated badly a man who had done a rune
job for them.
