MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
OLC 74-0287
26 February 1974
SUBJECT: Leakage of Senator Baker's Correspondence to Mr. Colby
,77
1. With respect to Senator Baker's letter to Mr. Colby of 22
February 1974, concerning Messrs. Woodward and Bernstein,of the
Post, inquiry on Fred Thompson's memorandum, Senator Baker said
that he was:
a. Puzzled why Mr. Colby was called by the Post if the
reporters did not have a copy of Senator Baker's letter to
Mr. Colby. (Clearly the Thompson memorandum by itself
is revealing of CIA's interest.)
b. Said his copy of his letter to Mr. Colby contained a
marking that Mr. Colby's copy did not contain which would
permit him to determine whose copy (Baker's or Colby's)
was in the hands of the Post.
2. Fred Thompson said Mr. Woodward was taken off the Watergate
story because of Mr. Bennett's allegations that he had fed Mr. Woodward
stories to take the heat off himself and Mr. Woodward was not reluctant to
take the credit for the stories. For this reason Mr. Thompson thought it
was interesting that Mr. Woodward would have bgeri)handling Mr. Bernstein's
calls.
