Approved For Release 2001/03/06 : CIA-RDP82-00457RO10000180001-4 CONFIDENTIAL CLASSIFICATION 0NT"'0"/Ua OF".ICIAIS ONLY Poland Soviet Zone) SECURITY i FORMATTON COUNTRY -REPORT NO. 25X1A TOPIC Polish and Soviet Troops in Minsk Mazowieck:i R-EFtRENCE:S PACES ENCLOSURES (NO. & TYPE) REMARKS- 1. In late July and or early Auc-ust l'?51, Polish soldiers with re,, s:si vice color were observed in the barracks installation on the eastern perimeter of Minsk L;azowiecki, 25X1X on the north side of the road to Kaluszyn (R 53/L58). The installation, which prior to rorld War II had uartered a Po1i avalry regiment, appeared to be only lightly occupied, , the troops stationed there 'tent to a summer camp in t e spring of 19_1. No tanks or artillery pieces were observod 25X1 B with these troops. 2. Soviet soldiers were quartered in the former officers and NCOs' buildin:-s on the south side of the road to Kaluszyn, opposite the barracks installation mentioned in 25X1 B paragraph 1. Truck there.. The soldiers wore black e-)aulets with crossed-tool insignia. According to local residents, the ntmiber of soldiers in the quarters during July and August 1951 s s substantially sr ~ll.er than the number present in the spring of 1951. The personnol quartered there in the surer of 1951 were alie;edly connected with a Sovi.;t airfield under construction nortrr, vest of T ienia (R 53/L 48). * * Comment. This is the first report on soviet troops in iinsk Mazowiecki. Since t,ho black service color is indicative of signal troops, the soldiers probably belong to a signal detachment responsible for maintenance of the aoviot telephone trunk line from Berlin to Moscow. Similar detachments are stationed at various places along t ho main through h1,rhway from Poznan to '-+arsaw. It is doubted that the soldiers are officially affiliated with the ,Novi,,t porsonnel at the airi'iold near Mienia.
