Family Offers Reward for Information on Niehous
During a press conference in Caracas on 11 August
Mrs. Donna L. Niehous took the latest initiative to break
the deadlock in negotiations between the Venezuelan govern-
ment and the kidnappers of her husband, William Niehous,
former manager of the Owens-Illinois complex in'Venezuela,
who was kidnapped in late February. Mrs. Niehous announced
she "feared that the people of Venezuela had forgotten her
husband," and consequently she and a group of unidentified
friends had collected approximately US $465,000 which would
be awarded to any person providing information concerning her
husband's location or leading to his release. Mrs.. Niehous
said the information could be given directly to her or sent
through the office of Cardinal Quintero in 'Caracas.
The day before Mrs. Niehous' press conference, a Caracas
newspaper reported it had received a message from Niehous'
kidnappers saying the prisoner was "not only alive but in
perfect physical condition." The message also said none of
the persons arrested by the Venezuelan government in connec-
tion with the case, including two members of the Venezuelan
Chamber of Deputies, are members of the kidnapping gang or
connected in any way with the case.
