MEMORANDUM FOR: The Record
SUBJECT : Trip Report
9 May 1955
1. During the period 21 April 1955 to 5- May 1955, the undersigned
traveled to the United States Navy Base at Key West, Florida, for the
purpose of witnessing/'tests conducted with the Technical Services Staff
personnel balloon The tests were conducted jointly by TSS/WAD and
TSS/TSL with the cooperation of the United States Navy.
2. Three test flights were made. Each launching was accomplished
from the deck of a submarine and each flight was tracked by Navy surface
and aircraft units.
3. The purpose of the tests was to determine the feasibility of
loading and stewing necessary flight and launching gear aboard a sub-
marine, to determine meteorlogical support parameters, problems incumbent
in launching the balloon from a submarine deck,and to test certain
specialized equipment for operational feasibility. The undersigned was
at the test site for the specific purpose of becoming familiar with as
many aspects of the personnel balloon project as Possible during the test
and to be of assittance where necessary.
4. The three test flights were successful and much information was
gained from the tests relative to the special problems involved in this
type ofcperation. A detailed test report is being prepared jointly by
TSS/WAD and TSS/TSL.
