MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Visit with Senator Stennis, 18 December 1973
On 18 December I visited with Senator Stennis for a very
few minutes when he stepped out of a conference committee. I
stated that I was concerned at Senator Howard Baker's continued
indications that he believed that CIA was somehow involved
more deeply in Watergate. I pointed out that we had responded
to every specific matter Senator Baker had raised with us, and
had apparently silisfied him on these natters, but that he had
referred to some additional information whose source he was
not authorized to reveal. I said that this was a very unsatis-
factory situation to us as it made us unable to prosecute the
specifics of any particular allegation he may, have. I stated
that I came te*Senator Stennis to seek his advice on whether I
should go to Senator Baker to say that if he could not reveal
the source to me would helpleaSe discuss the matter in depth
with Senator Stennis or Senator Symington? We discussed this
a bit. Senator Stennis said that he did not think that this
direct approach would be a good idea but that he might be able
to raise the matter in some appropriate way with Senator Baker
to see if he could determine what his problems Were. I thanked
Senator Stennis and left the matter with him.
