MOLOTOV SAYS ZORIN RECALLED BECAUSE OF STALEMATE IN SOVIET-WEST GERMAN RELATIONS Molotov recently told the Swedish am- bassador that Moscow had recalled Ambassador Zorin from Bonn because there are to be no particular develop- men in relations with West Germany at present and a man of Zorin's experience in foreign affairs could not be wasted there. Molotov was evasive about Zorin's possi- ble successor and left the impression that it might be some time before one is named. Ambassador Bohlen believes that Molo- tov's explanation has some credibility. However, Bohlen thinks the West German ambassador is also correct in connecting Zorin's recall with the East German leaders' visit to Moscow and the USSR's desire to reassure them that it will not negotiate with Bonn. Comment The recall of Zorin will probably be followed by Soviet propaganda charges that Bonn, by its cool treatment of Zorin, has shown its lack of interest in progress toward unification. 24 July 56 Current Intelligence Bulletin Page 4 TTINFIDEN-TIA-L- Approved for Release: 2019/10/23 C03185125 Approved for Release: 2019/10/23 C03185125 L A.J1-,1%..11.1..,, I 3. FIRST SUBMARINES REPORTEDLY LAUNCHED AT SHANGHAI Comment Facilities at Kiangnan were expanded between October 1952 and April 1955, and a large number of Soviet experts in "W-class" con- struction have been identified in the Shanghai area since early 1955. The "W-class" long-range submarine, with a maximum patrol radius of about 4,700 miles, would add considerably to Chinese Communist offensive ca,pabili- ties. 24 July 56 Current Intelligence Bulletin TOP-SfeRE-71 Approved for Release: 2019/10/23 C03185125 Page 5 Approved for Release: 2019/10/23 C03185125 I Vol hJ1-41...-1A.L..4 1 Sue NO10 4. SYRIAN DEFENSE MINISTER SEEKS INVITATION TO CAIRO Comment The antileftist army group in Syria presumably is worried about the pos- sibility that Egypt might support a countercoup by leftist ele- ments. the antileftist group was not satisfied with the results of the visit to Cairo last week of General Nizam al-Din new Syrian chief of staff. Raslan will probably try to convince Cairo that no change in Syrian Egyptian military relations will occur as a result of the ouster of former chief of staff Shuqayr. 24 July 56 Current Intelligence Bulletin Page 6 TOP-SEC-IRET Approved for Release: 2019/10/23 C03185125 Approved for Release: 2019/10/23 C03185125 'Li 1-11 Nt /1_1'1_4/ V 1. .1L-2-17=1"- Nod *Noli 5. SINGAPORE TRADE MISSION TO COMMUNIST CHINA A 60-man Singapore trade mission, in- cluding 50 Chinese businessmen, is scheduled to visit Communist China the second or third week of August in re- sponse to an invitation from the Commu- nists in marcn. The mission is sponsored by wealthy, pro= Peiping rubber merchants. The American consul general in Singapore believes the delegates will be offered impressive, politically inspired business deals. While local businessmen hope to develop a mainland market for rubber, tin and other exports, the consul general believes that actually any increased trade would result mainly in greater exports by the Chinese, further widening the present trade gap in favor of Communist China. Widespread support from the Singapore Chinese community, together with former chief minister Marshall's decision to head the delegation, has prevented the Singapore Labor Front government from officially dis- couraging the mission. A 40-man delegation from the Federation of Malaya will also visit Communist China in August. 24 July 56 Current Intelligence Bulletin Page 7 -CONFIDENTIAL Approved for Release: 2019/10/23 C03185125 Approved for Release: 2019/10/23 C03185125 VI NI' 111E1.1 IIAL. Noe Nue THE ARAB-ISRAELI SITUATION (Information as of 1700, 23 July) Prior to his departure from the Near East on 23 July, UN secretary general Hammarskjold an- nounced plans to return to the area in October. (Press) The death of Lt. Col. Mustafa, Egyptian military attachn Jordan and director of terrorist activity against Israel from Jordan, moved the Cairo press to call for revenge. Although evidence remains circumstantial, Egypt considers Israel responsible for the recent killing of Egyptian terrorist leaders with bombs sent in parcels through the mail,. Israel charged that infiltrators from Jor- dan penetrated an Israeli settlement west of Jerusalem at day- break, tossing a hand grenade into a school and firing on a bus. No casualties were reported.
