Most of the other youths managed to flee the village. was taken to an unfamiliar area in BINH CHANH District where Company 2 quartered until its departure for SAIGON on 5 February. During this time the VC conscripted 10 young men, aged from 17 to 24 years, about approximately 20 women, aged from 20 to 22 years, to serve as ammunition bearers. 3.3(h)(2) With a strength of 60 to 70 men armed with AK Rifles and 30 ammunition bearers, Company 2 left for SAIGON. The ammunition bearers carried 400 AK Rounds. The group walked to SAIGON, passing through a devastated residential area whose inhabitants had already fled, and arrived at a three-storey building. The 10 male ammunition bearers were confined on the building's upper floor. Five VC soldiers were assigned to guard them for two days (6 and 7 February). The 20 female bearers were quartered separately under a 10-man armed guard. Neither group was permitted to leave its quartering area. At 0400 hours, 8 February the 20 femAle bearers rejoined the 10 men. At 1200 3.3(h)(2) hours Company 2 returned to the building where the men were quartered to pick up fresh ammunition. Company 2 and the ammunition bearers left the building at 2000 hours, each bearer carrying 400 AK Rounds. The group was advised that it was to return to its area of activity, an area unknown Prior to the group's departure for SAIGON, each member was issued four to five liters of rice. Cadres advised the group that once the rice was consumed, the soldiers would have to purchase food on the economy. Each member was then given eight GVN piastres.
