When the VC drafted Source in 1967, they told him that he was obliged to Om Along since he had reached military age and the GVN tould take him if he did not join: the VC. Source said that beginning in 1962, the VCwere able to draft'SUccessfullz many village youthe because the Strategic hamlet program of. the GVN failed to provide villagers with seourity. At the time Source was drafted, five other youths were also taken along. Some tried to escape by fleeing to CHOUIT hut were naught; no punishment was meted out. Source became part of the guerrilla unit for two months. Their duties were to guard cadre meetings, to patrol the village's six hamlets, and to protect a. hamlet in which a meeting was held. Source and five other members of his guerrilla unit were transferred to the army on 30 December 1967. (Village guerrilla units contained from five to 10. men. If a unit became too large*, the VC would transfer the excess members into the army.) They were assigned to Company 3, Battalion 6, which quartered VUON THOM. Company 3 was formed from village guerrilla unit members and 'had a strength of 60 men. About 5 January 19680 Company 3 went to BA THU area (XT 248025) Cambodia, an area in which many Cambodians were living. The trip took about four nights. Company 3 remained in BA THU. for almost a month and received military training. The company bought its food locally at BA THU..
