Argentine authorities are handling the late August arrest and
continuing detention of a prominent Jewish family in an

unusually openhanded manner. In a departure from previous
practice, the Foreign Office has confirmed the family's de-
tention and explained that its members are being investigated
on charges of subversive activity. The army, in a rare
display of candor, has also publicly acknowledged the arrests.
The authorities' forthcoming attitude in this case may be an
attempt to offset abuses apparently perpetrated by the security
forces in its initial stages.
