Gen. Augusto Hughes was Air Defense Commander for nine months prior to his cur- rent appointment. Although anti-United States during the conflict, Hughes realizes that Argentina needs to cooperate with the United States in order to purchase US aircraft with in- ternational financing. ( Hughes backs the development of nuclear technology for military uses. ARGENTINA believe Hughes was chosen to head the Air Force because he is considered a professional Air Force officer with no political aspi- rations. 1 Hughes is critical of the Army command for spending too much time dwelling on Argentina's defeat instead of addressing the current economic crisis.I that Hughes is a close, personal friend of Juan Carlos Trimarco, Commander of the powerful Army I Corps. Following graduation from the Military Aviation School in 1951, Hughes served with various air brigades. He received flight and maintenance training in the United States in the early 1960s. During the 1970s he served successively as Chief of Operations, V Air Brigade; air attache to Brazil; Chief of Operations, IV Air Brigade; Air Force Chief of Operations; Commander, IV Air Brigade; and Chief of Staff, Air Defense Command. Hughes, 51, is married and has five children. He speaks some English. 3.5(c) MICRO ONLY CR M 82-15019 20 October 1982 3.5(c) 3.3(b)(1) 3.5(c) 3.3(b)(1) 3.5(c) 3.3(b)(1) 3.3(b)(1) 3.5(c) Approved for Release: 2018/10/02 C06628413
