1. As of late August 1951, Chinese Communist Army units in Tsinghai consisted
of J,_~Cavalry Division and a portion of the 8 Army, both assigned to
the Group, 1 Field AMP. Headquarters of the 8 Army was in Hsining
('101-49 36-37), while its 22 Division was stationed along a line from
Minbo (' ?2-55, 36-18), through Hsining to Tulan (98-46, 37-01) and
Iatsaidam Lake (95-10, 37-30). Its 24 Division was stationed at Yushu.
(96-52, 33-01) as a reserve for Chinese Communist troops in Tibet. Its 23
Division was stationed at various points along the motor road in Kansu
and was centered at Shantan (:L01-17, 38-47), The division relied on this
road, which ran from Shantan to Hsining via Weiyuan (104-09, 35--08), for
communication with 8 Army headquarters.1
2. In late August military district troop units consisted of one infantry
regiment, stationed at Hsinin;g, and two cavalry regiments, which had
elements stationed at various places in Yushu.
3, As of late August militia units consisted of 25,000 poorly equipped
militiamen, still in productive activity, from 19 hsien, one municipality,
and three adzninistrati offices of the province. Although the population
of Tsinghai is 1,30 O% the militia force was less than 2 percent of
this,one of the lowest ratios of militia to total provincial population
in the country.
