This can be obtained in Hong Kong by mail from China. He must also provide a guarantor, either a shopkeeper or}head of a family,, with a permanent residence certificate in the area of ,his desti.natio33.1 The entrance permit is not collected at the point of entry into China, but is surrendered to public security bureau authorities at the time the traveller makes application for a residence certificate at his final destination. Ordinarily a person entering China is not required to obtain a permit for travel in China., but he is required to notify the local census registration office of his intention to travel and his destination. However, if he plans to travel to Chekiang Province, Chekiang authorities require him to obtain a travel permit at 1 ,s point of departure. In South and Southeast China a traveller seeking a hotel room is subject to a thorough interrogation by public security personnel unless he can identify hihself by a labor union membership card or other means. Canton is the onlyc~ty in China where citizens' identification cards are issued to residents. 3.
