There was heavy rust on the.rails. There were no breaks in the rails nor any evidence of reconstruction. ,At 11:50 p.m. on 10 January) 12 trucks were at CT-740503 going from the K~umsong (QT-7953) area toward Kumhwa (CT-6638). Eight of them were -63, 4 x 4, carg'Q trucks, apparently loaded with rice bags. The' other fo'ur were GAZ-51, 4 x 2, cargo trucks which appeared to be loaded with ammunition boxes. They were traveling loss than 10 miles per hour. At midnight 30 fully armed Chinese Communist forces (CCF) troops walked south along the'road at CT- 740503, in two columns. In a valley at ' CT-736512 were six trucks parked with their lights on. Nearby were a number of CCF troops who were singing while working with picks and shovels on rock. 2. hree GXA-51, 4 x 2, cargo trucks traveling nortli rom a pec on of Kumsong stopped at a CCF checkpoint at CT-742582, then took"the righthand fork of the road. Neither men nor trenches were visible in the area. According to a local resident there was a CCF hospital at CT-716657, built into the side of a hill. It had a door made of boards and the roof was thickly covered with dirt. In an open space near a civilian house at CT-705660 were two stacks of charcoal bags. Each stack,1,was $ meters long, 6 meters wide, and 3.5 meters high. Some were quartered in about 20 damaged civilian houses, the others were living in trenches and bunkers in the area. Parked west of the houses was a large, L0-wheeled truck with a trailer about the size of a US jeep trailer. The truck resembled a ZIS-151, 6 x 6, cargo truck except that the cab windows were more round. The bed of the truck was covered with metal. It resembled an ambulance with two doors at the, back. On the trailer was, apparently, a generator, from which two large electric cables ran through one of the rear truck doors.1 About 100 yards from the truck were forty 50-gallon fuel drumt. Two or three jeeps and three GAZ-51, 14 x 2, cargo trucks were moving about in the area from time to time.2 6, three tanks were going south from the Kumsong area through CT-739500Y at an estimated speed of more than 30 miles per hour. The tanks resembled a_ T y p e 5-94 (Japanese) medium tank. They did not resemble a T-34. They were equipped with two turret-mounted guns. The upper gun was about two yards long, the other about one yard. Both were an estimated 80 to 86-mm. caliber.3 On the front of the tanks were four lights in pairs, the larger of each pair on top. On each side of the top turret and aboip the has guns was one machine gun. One of the heavy guns had a muzzle break. They were split into small groups and worked with picks and shovels in a desultory, undisciplined manner. xi 16_ January in the area near CT-748446 explosions and the sound of pic s an shovels being used could be heard. North of the demilitarized zone explosions could be heard both day and night. 7. The CCF troops observed Iwore qui~ted uniforms wa4.g3i closely resembled the North Korean army uniform except he the CCF uniform had a collar. They wore fur hats. They had neither shoulder patches nor visible hat insignia. All those who were not on working parties were armed with long rifles which closely25X1 resembled the Mossin-Nagant (Soviet), 7.62-mm. carbine, M-1938. 8.
