There were widespread rumors in AMohanmledabad on 30 October that three
trainloads of Soviet ro ved'recently at Artyk (37-35N, 59-17E),
and on a string of cars on the siding at
Artyk. he stance was too great to permit estimation of the number or
type of cars. The cars were detached, with no locomotive present.
25X1X 2? a string of 60 cars on a siding about one-
half kilometer from Choqorogli (37-28N, 59-23E)d These cars were painted
dark red, and were of a type normally used as third-class passenger cars.

3. Also on 3 November, Informant observed a string of cars, without locomotive,
standing on a siding at Khai Khosrow (37~-28N, 59.-26.E) near Kaushut (37 37N,

4, Inquiry revealed that all of the above-mentioned trains had arrived about
15 October. The arrival. has given rise to widespread local speculation
in which the train arrivals have been linked to the Iranian oil crisis.
5m A Soviet camp comprising about small buildings has been observed
opposite Shalgan (37.-29N, 59-23E1) in a deep valley about six hundred yards
from the frontier watch tower, in the direction of Tedzhenda
