Thanked Peter Flanigan for forwarding the views of a former CAB official on the relationship of route preferences for Icelandic Airlines to US manning of the NATO base at Keflavik. Noted, however, that the Icelandic Government was not planning to terminate the Keflavik arrangement. (Scowcroft - 66) Visit of Icelandic Foreign Minister. Informed State of the importance the President attaches to the retention of the US-manned NATO base in Iceland. Instructed them to make clear in their discussions with the Icelandic Foreign Minister the vital role the US attributes to the Icelandic Defense Force, a view shared by other members of NATO.
