SUBJECT: Reported US Involvement in Anti-Husayn Plot
3. A portion of this story surfaced briefly last April.
Husaynis popularity among Jordanians was then on one of its
occasional downswings because of his marriage to a commoner,
and as usual the discontented were looking to Hassan as a wiser
head.

Our guess is that the Soviets or some
Arabs might have such an interest, but that the Israelis would
not. If a deliberate fabrication is involved, we would expect to
see the story crop up anew in other channels. So far it has not,
but we will continue to watch for it.
5. We have considered the pros and cons of sharing this
information with Husayn now lest he hear it first from other
quarters. Rather than take such action at this time, we recommend
waiting to see whether further dissemination of this story, or some
fresh suspicion toward Hassan or the US on Husaynts part, would
make such action appropriate at some later date.
