A critical investigation of the concept of gloss Is r)
undertaken. The part of subjectivity In the evaluation
of gloss ig r'ecalled. It to then shown that various
kinds of gloss exist. which are not evaluated In the
same manner. The Investigation was restricted to
materials such as papers, which do not give apparent
specular images. It is shown that the main parameter
of gloss is the excess of the luminance factor in the
direction of direct rvf1cetion over the luminance fac-
tor in another direction, where no specular reflection
