Experiments show that the fundamental reason for the
inability of rudbeckis plant rosettes, deprived of roots,
to form normal fihoots, bud and flower under the con-
ditions of a favorable length of day Is found In the lack
of boron. From a nutrient solution or pure tap water
with only traces of boron, rudbeckla plante with rcots
extracted It in a quantity sufficient for their unhamp-
ered growth; plants with the roots cut off took it in In-
adequately. An increased boron concentration in the
nutrient solution or its artilicial introduction through
the leaves compensated for this deficiency. The neces
