The dimethyl eater and the dichloride of 2, 4- and
2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid were treated with c,
W -glycols having 2 to 6 carbon atoms. The ester-ex-
change catalysts K2C03- Ce02, and PbO were used at
0. 01A by weight of the dimethyl eater. Purified nitro-
gen was passed through the reaction raixture. Hosting
of the reactants was conducted at normal pressure at
1600C for 2 hr and at 180oC for 3 hr, and under pres-
a urea of 0. 05 to 0. 5 mm. Hg at 1800C (or 30 min and
at 2300C for I hr. Polyesters containing furan rings
derived from a,&) -glycols containing an odd number
of carbon atoms had lower melting points than those *I T-h."
