LUBANGO AIRFIELD, ANGOLA
1. SIGNIFICANCE: CRASH SITE IDENTIFIED. (SWN)
2. REMARKS: A PROBABLE TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT HAS CRASHED APPARENTLY
ON TAKEOFF NEAR THIS AIRFIELD THE 25X1
AIRCRAFT IMPACTED APPROXIMATELY 1,000 METERS NORTHEAST OF THE
EAST END OF THE RUNWAY AND BROKE APART WHILE SKIDDING ALONG A
300-METER PATH. A PROBABLE TAIL SECTION IS THE ONLY
IDENTIFIABLE PIECE OF WRECKAGE. NO RESCUE OR SALVAGE VEHICLES
APPEAR TO BE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. (SWN)
OPEN SOURCE PRESS REPORTS INDICATE A BOEING 737 OPERATED BY THE
ANGOLAN NATIONAL AIRLINE, CARRYING APPROXIMATELY 150 PASSENGERS
AND CPEWMEMBERS, CRASHED SHORTLY AFTER TAKEOFF
A REPORT BY THE YUGOSLAV PRESS AGENCY, TANYUG, SAID THE
AIRCRAFT WAS CARRYING A LARGE NUMBER OF ANGOLAN MILITARY
RECRUITS. (U)
LUBANGO AIRFIELD, 75 NM NORTHEAST OF MOCAMEDES AND 120 NM NORTH
OF THE ANGOLA-NAMIBIA BORDER, IS A MAJOR FIGHTER BASE THAT
SUPPORTS A FISHBED UNIT. (SWN)
