MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD
SUBJECT: Evaluation of Rapid Interpretation Printer-Processor
On 16 June 1966 the prototype Printer-Processor was partially
disassembled to repair and evaluate. Complete evaluation is estimated to
require three days due'to the extent of disassembly required. The following
items were discovered during this partial evaluation.
1. Four of the nine 0 rings, which guide film through the processor,
are missing. Counting from left to right, rings 1, 2, 3, and 5 are missing.
The remaining rings,. being concentrated on one side, causes film to skew.
This results in film becoming jammed between the upper and lower sets of
feed rollers.
2. The endless flat fiber belt, used also to guide film, has
numerous worn and frayed spots, especially at the seam.
3. A suggestion, to aid operators to insert film straight, would be
to provide a beveled shim on each side of the input orifice. Since the film input
guide is below eye level, it is extremely difficult for operators to insert
film without skewing.
4. Suggest manufacturer provide.an access panel on future processors.
This panel should be located to allow film to be removed when jammed between
the lower flat belt mandrel and the first set of lower feed rolls. This
would greatly expedite removal of film jams, thereby increasing operating
time. At present a jam in this area requires 3 hours to remove.
5. There is no external evidence of wear on gears, bearings, shafts
or chain.
