FROG-7 ORGANIZATION AND DEPLOYMENT, SYRIA (S)
(TSR) This report summarizes the organization and deployment of the FROG-7 tactical
artillery rocket forces in Syria. 25X1
25X1
(S/WNINTEL,Q The first unit identification of FROG-7 tactical artil25X1
rorkp.t for 77ria was at the Al Qutayfah Tactical SSM Storage and Training Facility
Figure 1), 25.4 kilometers northeast of Damascus, on photography 25X1
Based on a Soviet FROG table of organization,* the 33 FRC25X1
transporter-erector-launchers (TEL)/resupply vehicles observed were believed to equate to
five or six FROG-7 battalions.
(S/WNINTEL) In mid-1975 construction was started on five groups of underground,
drive-in vehicle storage buildings at the Al Qutayfah Facility. Each of these groups con-
tained six buildings and was being constructed adjacent to existing FROG-7 unit vehicle
parking areas. Each parking area contained two FROG TELs, two BREAD BIN
meteorological (met) radars, one "Robotron" computer vehicle, and support vehicles. FROG
resupply vehicles were parked within the areas in revetments in groups of four. From this
grouping of vehicles and buildings, it was believed at that time that the Syrians had
organized five FROG-7 battalions of two batteries each, each battery consisting of one TEL
and two resupply vehicles.
(S/WNINTEL) Prior to November 1975 a sixth group of six underground, drive-in vehi-
cle storage buildings was completed. thirty-six buildings had bee25X1
completed and were in the process of being earth covered. Two FROG-7 resupply vehicle
parking and support areas had also been established, one on each side of the facility. The
support equipment found in each area was the same as the equipment usually associated
with the support and maintenance units of a FROG-7 battalion (Figures 2 and 3).
(SECRET/WNINTEL/SPOKE the Syrians conducted a FF25X1
live-fire training mission. The FROG battalion involved in the mission consisted of three
batteries, each battery having two firing sections.**
(TSR) Continuing analysis of imagery from November 1975 through September 1977
showed no further change in the deployment pattern of equipment or vehicles at Al
Qutayfah Tactical SSM Storage and Training Facility (Figure 4). Based on this analysis it is
believed that the organization of the Syrian FROG-7 Tactical Artillery Rocket Forces con-
sists of two FROG-7 battalions. Each battalion (Figure 5) consists of a headquarters section,
a communications platoon, a technical platoon, a maintenance platoon, and three FROG-7
batteries. Each FROG-7 battery consists of a headquarters section, two meteorological pla-
toons, two survey sections, and two firing sections. Each firing section consists of one FROG
TEL and two resupply vehicles.
