TRANSPORT HAVE ARRIVED AT GROOTFONTEIN AIRFIELD
DEP ANGOLA BORDER. SIMILAR DEPLOYMENTS WERE "
OBSERVED PRIOR TO OPERATIONS IN ANGOLA IN SEPTEMBER 1981.
(S/D) REMARKS: FIVE MIRAGE F-1 FIGHTER-BOMBERS, ONE CANBERRA
LIGHT TACTICAL BOMBER, AND ONE COMBAT SUP PORT DC -4 MEDIUM
(GRAPHIC I OF 2). ALL FIVE MIRAGE F-1 ARE ARMED WITH
AIR-TO-AIR MISSILES. A PORTABLE NOSE HANGAR IS POSITIONED OVER
THE FORWARD FUSELAGE SECTION OF THE CANBERRA. PREPARATIONS FOR
THE DEPLOYMENT OF COMBAT AIRCRAFT TO THIS AIRFIELD WERE UNDER
WAY WHEN TWO L-100 MEDIUM TRANSPORTS AND ONE
C-160 MEDIUM TRANSPORT DEPLOYED TO THE FIELD. THE TWO L-100
HAVE SINCE DEPARTED. MIRAGE F-1 AND CANBERRA WERE LAST HERE ON
IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO OFFENSIVE OPERATIONS IN
AND INCLUDES FOUR C-47 AND ONE SMALL STRAIGHT-WING AIRCRAFT.
ANGOLA IN EARLY SEPTEMBER. OTHER AIR ORDER-OF-BATTLE IS NORMAL
GROOTFONTEIN IS A MAJOR STAGING BASE IN NORTHERN NAMIBIA, 130
NM SOUTH OF THE ANGOLA BORDER.
COMBAT HELICOPTERS HAVE DEPLOYED TO OHAINGU MILITARY CAMP SE
(GRAPHIC 2 OF 2). TWO PUMA AND FOUR ALOUETTE III HELICOPTERS
ARE NEAR THE ENTRANCE TO THE FACILITY. THESE AIRCRAFT HAVE
ARRIVED NO SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN
GROUND-RELATED MILITARY ACTIVITY IS OBSERVED.
ORAINGU MILITARY CAMP SE, 2 NM SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF OHAINGU AND
5 NN SOUTH OF THE ANGOLA BORDER, SUPPORTS SOUTH AFRICAN
MILITARY OPERATIONS INTO ANGOLA.
