This facility is 20 nautical miles (nni) ,vest of the USSR-Afghanistan border, in the Central Asia Military District 2. (S/1)) Units subordinate to the MRR included a tank battalion consisting of 39 medium tanks and one command vehicle: an engineer company with four TMM truck-mounted short gap hridges, one MTU-20 tank-launched bridge, and eight other vehicles: and a probable /Ply-_' antiaircraft gun hatterv (Figure I). A probable antitank hatter, a possible hossitzcr battalion, at least 110 trucks, Is trailers, and 20 other vehicles sere also present. The alignment of' this equip- ment indicated that the MRR prohahls had arrived recently. The barracks area is of sufficient size to house at least one full-strength MRR. The Kulsah installation has not been used as a SAM support facility since .lone 1975. 3. (S/1)) The nesyly identified MRR at Kulvah may he the NIRR that ssas missing from Dushanbe Army Barracks AL-'_/Headquarters Motorized Rifle Division 1 -1 on Dushanbe is approximately 75 rim north'est of Kulvah. The relocation of one of' the tsso MRR housed in Dushanhc would result in a broader area of operation for this division. The third MRR subordinate to the division at Dushanhe is housed at Korean Tyuhc :Army Barracks AL-1 ~5 nm west of Ikulyah and 50 11111 south of Dushanhc. The MRR at Kul~ah min have been deplored to fill a gap in defensive deployment along the border or in preparation for deployment to Afghanistan.
