(TSR) The entire town of Cahama in southern Angola appears to have been converted into a joint Angolan-Cuban military garrison. This report describes the defensive measures and training facilities observed at Cahama Military Camp Cahama is a small town along the surfaced, dual-lane highway that connects Lubango (formerly Sa Da Bandeira) with the Namibian border. 2. (TSR) The main compound in the town is fence secured and includes a headquarters building with a white star (a probable Cuban insignia) on the ground and seven revetted storage areas for vehicles and equipment (six of which contain sheds; Figures 1 and 2). Seven addi- tional revetted storage sheds are on the south side of town. Defenses within this installation include personnel trenches with weapons-firing positions. Approximately 200 men were observed on the road adjacent to the compound. 3. (TSR) A separately fence-secured physical training area is adjacent to the compound. Two Soviet-type obstacle courses (a motorized rifle type and a tank/engineer type), a gymnastics area, and a baseball diamond are all within the boundaries of this area. Two automatic weap- ons-firing ranges (one for armor) are on the northern edge of town. Two driver-training courses are associated with this facility. An armored-vehicle, driver-training course encircles one of the automatic weapons-firing ranges (Figure 1). A wheeled-vehicle, driver-training course (not shown on graphics) is on the western edge of the facility. 4. (TSR) Air defense facilities were seen both within the town and along a trail that extends southward into the bush. Four SA-7 firing positions and five occupied, six-position, light antiaircraft artillery (AAA) sites are in the town (Figures 1 and 2).
