POSSIBLE AIRFIELD UNDER. CONSTRUCTION
PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA
1. (S.WWN) SIGNIFICANCE: CONSTRUCTION OF A POSSIBLE NEW
AIRFIELD ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF PYONGYANG.
2. (SWN) REMARKS: A POSSIBLE AIRFIELD IN THE EARLY STAGES OF
CONSTRUCTION WAS OBSERVED APPROXIMATELY 13 KM
SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF PYONGYANG ON IMAGER
APPROXIMATELY 800 METERS OF GROUND HAS BEEN
GRADED WITH A NORTH/SOUTH ORIENTATION, AND INITIAL SCARRING
INDICATES THAT THE CONSTRUCTION COULD EXTEND FOR AN
ADDITIONAL 3,600 METERS. A SUBBASE MIXING PLANT HAS BEEN
ERECTED WEST OF THIS GRADED AREA.
(SWN) ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES IN THE AREA
INCLUDE A BARGE-SERVED QUAY LOCATED AT UTM YD281134, A FOUR.
LANE BRIDGE THAT CROSSES THE TAEDONG-GANG (RIVER) AT UTM
YD362184 (NOT ON GRAPHIC), AND GROUND SCARRING FOR A
PROBABLE EXPRESSWAY FROM UTM YD343166"TO YD315144 (NOT ON
GRAPHIC). THE COMPLETION OF THE BRIDGE AND PROBABLE
HIGHWAY WOULD PROVIDE DIRECT ACCESS TO THE POSSIBLE NEW
AIRFIELD OR AIRPORT FROM DOWNTOWN PYONGYANG. NONE OF THIS
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY WAS PRESENT ON IMAGERY
(SWN ANALYSTS'S COMMENTS: SEVERAL FACTORS SUGGEST
THAT THIS CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY IS FOR A NEW CIVILIAN
AIRFIELD.
