1. SIGNIFICANCE: BTR-70 COMMAND VEHICLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED
IN AFGHANIST N. THIS IS THE FIRST IDENTIFICATION OF A
COMMAND VARIANT OF THE BTR-70 ARMORED PERSONNEL CARRIER
(APC). (SWN)
2. REMARKS: THREE BTR-70 COMMAND VEHICLES WERE OBSERVED IN
THE 40TH ARMY SIGNAL REGIMENT VEHICLE PARK AT KABUL
DEPLOYMENT AREA SW THE
VEHICLES APPEARED TO BE TURRETLESS WITH A SMALL PORTABLE
GENERATOR BOX MOUNTED AT THE CENTER REAR OF THE VEHICLE.
AN UNIDENTIFIED CANVAS-COVERED OBJECT NEAR THE FRONT OF THE
VEHICLE WAS ELEVATED ABOVE THE POSITION OCCUPIED BY THE
TURRET ON THE STANDARD BTR-70 APC. THE BTR-70 COMMAND
VEHICLES WERE PRESENT SINCE AT LEAST 10 JUNE 1983 AND HAD
DEPARTED BY MID-OCTOBER. (SWN)
